[Chetna N. Shukla]
It was a
unique experience for me to compare the behavior/disposition of the Pavo Cristatus (the peacock)
through two different proving, one of the part of its whole (the feather) and
the other the whole itself (the egg). I never planned it like that, it just
happened. This brought to light the most asked for question…
“Is the
part of the whole the whole itself?”
“ Do two
different parts of the same whole also represent the whole itself in the same
way?”
Objected
can the number of provers was limited and the time
duration was limited. But what is important in any proving is not the number of
provers but their sensitivity and their inherent
capacity to feel the substance in their being and their ability to express the
same. And later the Internal Consistency developed. As I understand nothing
happens without a cause and I feel and therefore say that the participants were
destined to experience this energy
in their
being and their contribution of this experience must not be underestimated for
want of logic and statistics.
“Is it possible to classify the vast number of
patients that we see in our practice into just a handful of remedy pictures?
In 1963,
India declared the Mayura, Sanskrit for the Blue
Peafowl as the National Bird of India an appropriate choice as this gentle bird
symbolizes the character of India as a peaceful, yet strong nation.
The Peacock
has a venerable place in Hindu Mythology. It is the vehicle of Lord Kartikeya. The story of how the bird got the eyes on its
splendid tail feathers (called train by bird watchers) is interesting. Afraid
of the haughty
and unconquerable
Ravana, the gods would take the form of different
animals at his approach. Thus, Indra became a
peacock, Yama a Crow, Kubera
a lizard, Varuna a Flamingo and so on. After the fall
of Ravana, the gods
rejoiced
and rewarded the creatures whose form they had taken. Indra
gave his thousand eyes to the Peacock, so that it would not fear the serpents.
Ancient Hindus believed that it was good luck to see the Peacock.
The Peacock
is perhaps the most beautiful bird in the world. The dark, bright and beautiful
eyes; the rich, iridescent plumage as of a silk sari; the crown-bedecked head:
and delicate movements; impart it the traditional beauty
of a delicate,
coy, beautiful Indian woman. The bird’s only blemish is its legs, and it is
said that the bird stops its courtship dance if it happens to glance its own
legs!
Due to its
beauty the Indian Peafowl has a long history of domestication. Alexander the
Great, after his journey to India took back with him 200 Peafowls.
Which spread to other parts of Europe. One would be surprised to know
that there
are now wild populations of Indian Peacock in Australia.
The Peacock
belongs to the family Phasianidae, a group that has
been a valuable source of food for the man (chicken). The Peacock is a large
ground bird, but also perches and roosts on trees. Though quick and strong in
flying
it is
incapable of long flights. Its diet is a mix of seeds, tender shoots and animal
matter, such as insects, small reptiles (including snakes).
The birds
keep to small parties, forming harems during the breeding season. It is during
the breeding season that the Peacock dances, with his ocellated
tail spread and erected, and does a constant quivering, which gives a
zizzing
sound in his amorous attempts to entice the hens. The hens quite drab compared
to the cock and also lacking the train (tail feathers), show, or pretend not to
show, any interest in the antics of the poor male most of the
time. Well
patience does pay, and after some days, the hen lays usually of 4-6 eggs,
hidden in the cover of scrub vegetation, which she alone incubates. The young
are downy and can follow their parents and feed on their own,
soon after
hatching.
Due to
their sacredness to Hindus and the Buddhists, peacocks are regularly found in
close proximity to human population. Even their crop depredations are
tolerated. Due to its sacredness, many communities in India do not
kill the
peafowl for food.
