Stramonium datura Anhängsel

Most relatives of the Stramonium genus grow in
Central and South America. They have hanging flowers and berries, and may reach
the height of small trees, though with rather
soft stems. Our thorn-apple (flowers and
capsule fruits firmly upright) lives in
Central/S. Europe, N. Africa and W. Asia.
If one has a feeling for how the growth of a
plant from seed is an exhalation into the physical, then the thorn-apple is the
image of "exhalation tightened in spasm". A strong shoot grows
upwards, with soft leaves of a faded blue-green spreading all round, though
their stems do not get away from the main shoot, they are fused with it. A
spindly, branching
root pushes downwards.
The leaf is basically ovoid, with triangular
points and lappets giving it a thistle-like appearance. This seems somehow in
contradiction to the soft consistency of the leaf. Growth, intended for a plant
of man's height, again ends suddenly and prematurely, just as in the deadly
nightshade and the henbane. The first flower causes a standstill. Before it,
the stem branches, and each side shoot in turn is brought to a stop by a
flower, and forks.
The bract leaves belonging to the flowers are
taken along, to the left and the right, by the forked shoots, their stems fused
with them, and only the laminae allowed to unfold at the next fork, to become
the bract of what in fact is the next higher flower. The plane of the next fork
is rotated by 90° in relation to the preceding gone, so that the plant as it
grows reaches out all round into space, resembling a funnel standing on its
point, this point being the first fork. What we have before us is a branching
structure similar to the bronchial tree. None of the other Solanaceae bring out
the principle of pseudo-dichotomous branching as clearly as this.
The final, uppermost shoot ends in a fan of
leaves, and from the green-yellow plane there rises, boldly and rather bizarre,
the topmost flower, and with it the others from lateral peaks grown to the same
height.
By this time, the lowermost flower has already
developed into a prickly seed capsule.
In the thorn-apple, the whole flowering process
is premature, funnelling much too deeply into the sphere of the leaf. Each
individual flower shows even more clearly the pattern of deep invagination. The
calyx widens a little first, then closes up tightly; from the narrow funnel
thus produced the slim throat of the flower breaks forth, a trumpet shape of
beaten metal. This compression of etheric swelling forces through astral
flowering forces causes water to exude from the fluid organization of the
plant, and this fills the space between calyx and corona in the bud. Such a
"water" calyx is a great rarity in the plant world. The flower
terminates in five sharp points. These are initially twisted in a spiral; as
the flower opens, the spiral unfolds, in arcs which always, no matter what the
position
of the flower on the plant, sweep from east to
south, west, and north, following the course of the sun in the sky. Yet this
actually happens at night, when the sun
is below the horizon. In the morning, the
gleaming white flower closes up, in a movement going in the opposite direction.
Thus the gestures of the flower affirm the movement of the sun at night, but
deny it by day. Here the thorn-apple is showing a new variant of the left-motif
of the Solanaceae. It is not only that the flowers open at night; the whole
plant seems to freshen up, it stands up straight, with leaves raised. The scent
coming from the plant at night is of an evocative sweetness, like a cunningly
composed perfume rather than a plant scent, and attracts night-flying moths
with probosces long enough to fit the deep funnel of the flower. In the morning
the flower closes up, with its anti-sun gesture, and drops down from the horizontal;
the leaves, too, are lowered, and the whole plant seems to sag. Once the flower
is pollinated, calyx and corona drop off as though cut off with a knife. The
fruit grows into a prickly ball, and finally the browny black seeds are shaken
from the opening capsule by the wind.
--The leaves have a repulsively sweetish,
animal-like smell. Like the henbane; the thorn-apple loves rubble and
wasteland.
Chemical analysis has demonstrated the presence
of l-hyoscyamine, and small quantities of atropine and l-scopolamine in the
plant, so that in this respect it is similar to the other Solanaceae we have
discussed.
However, in its more subtle aspects, the
medicinal action differs from that of the deadly nightshade and the henbane.
The leaves of the thorn-apple help to free the astral body of the asthmatic
when its grip is too tightly clenched in the process of exhalation. Stramonium
poisoning unleashes the forces of the will, at the same time separating them
from the guiding, purposive ego sphere, from the faculty of cognition.
Senseless actions are performed and continued with manic insistence.
Consciousness is taken over by hallucinatory, visionary states, which may also
be filled with erotic images arising from the lower, metabolic region, etc.
R.S. gave a new indication: the unripe fruit of
the thorn-apple suitably prepared may be used as a remedy for biliary colic
with gall stones. The rationale of this is apparent if one considers the
spamolytic properties of the plant, and also notes how the interplay between swelling
tendencies and the form-giving principle which goes on all through the plant,
culminates in the fruit, a prickly, radiant sphere. This fruit is very much
formed out and hardened; when it has rotted away, a delicate fibrous skeleton
is left behind. This form, like a spiked club, is also impressed upon the
crystal druses of Calc-ox. extracted from the fresh juice, a reflection
of centrifugal processes. These dynamics, of something inner being pushed
outwards, are activated in the remedy. The "prickles" are in fact
mainly vessels belonging to the fluid organization. In this case, something
which normally is rounded, forming drops and spheres, is radiated outwards.

Mittel. Es ist, als wüssten sie, 'ich
habe selbst etwas falsch gemacht.
esse ich gern Schokolade, berühre meinen Körper, will Lust verspüren.
benötigen, so
So
'Was ich
brauche, ist verboten.'
MG: Die
was ihnen
vorenthalten wurde. Hierzu wenden sie verschiedene Strategien an. Belladonna
[Massimo Mangliavori]
I would like to now compare and contrast Hyoscyamus
and Stramonium and to consider the most important differences between the two,
and how to relate and distinguish them from the other Belladonna-like remedies.
A common etiology for all of these
remedies is for someone to have experienced a violent environment. Although it
is easier to develop a Belladonna-like situation,
the violence is not a requirement. In terms of
deprivation there is a feeling since childhood that, "I should have
received love, under standing and protection and
never did. The most I could do was to try to protect
myself against danger."
Very often if instead of a nice upbringing, or instead
of almost nothing, as in the Magnesiums, you are injured or a victim of
violence it is much easier to develop
such a situation. I would like to state again that the
experience of violence is not a requirement in this etiology. It does not have
to be extreme violence like sexual or
physical abuse. There are many other ways of
expressing this violence on different levels. I prefer to use this idea of
deprivation in a general sense where one feels
they were deprived of something they feel they really
deserved as a child or a human being. There is a primary need that has not been
fulfilled in these remedies.
Jealousy comes out because you see another receive
this and you didn't.
Guilt of Stramonium
Talking about Stramonium, there is a big difference
between Stramonium and Belladonna. Usually Stramonium has a strong sense of
guilt. It is as if they
consider themselves responsible for this deprivation;
it was my fault that I was not loved.
Let's return to the image I gave you before, that
Belladonna does his best not to enter in contact with his dark side, doing his
best to try to control it, to keep
it closed. Mandragora faces this situation from a
distance, as if they can see this from a window. In Stramonium this person is
in his dark state and with the
feeling that, "If I am here it is my fault."
If you compare the symptoms of Stramonium with
Belladonna, you will see that Stramonium describes a possible sense of duality,
a split between the two
sides of himself. Symbolically Stramonium has the
desire of light. In a figurative sense, we can imagine someone who is in hell,
who is in a dark tunnel, who has
a clear feeling, "I am in this black abyss and I
don't know what to do to escape."
More importantly, they have the feeling, "I am
here because I did something wrong." Very often the wrong is related to
the issue that Stramonium is in contact with the dark side. He is able to
recognize that he can touch his anger, can experience his instincts, and the
feeling is that, "I am not allowed." There is a severe ambivalence, a
split between something unavoidable that, "I have to do just to exist, and
that this thing I have to do makes my environment reject me."
Instinctual world of Stramonium
Consider that what we are describing is the
instinctual world and that the Belladonna-like have problems being in contact
with this world. Belladonna tries to constipate, to wall off their instinctual
world to avoid contact, to prevent it from exploding. Mandragora watches their
instinctual world from a distance to try to avoid contact, but aware of its
existence. In the case of Stramonium they cannot avoid living with this part.
They need to be in contact with their instinctual world for their primary
needs: I have to eat, to go to the toilet, I have the desire to be touched,
caressed, to have sex. For Stramonium these issues are indispensable but are
perceived as a forbidden
sin. The dramatic conflict in Stramonium is the
impossibility of not getting in touch with that part of my instinct and that
part of me is forbidden.
Remorse?
LM: I am curious about the strong sense of guilt in
Stramonium; I have rarely seen guilt or any remorse in these patients. They can
behave innocently while the parents are listing their grievances and do not
seem to have a connection with their behavior; if there is guilt, there is no
remorse.
MM: First of all it is important to understand what
they consider guilt and then if this guilt necessarily means remorse. These are
two different issues. Stramonium
is much more ashamed, reserved, closed than other
cases of Belladonna-like.
It is as if they know "in myself I did something
wrong." The problem is that, "Because of what I did, I do not get
what I deserve from my parents or from my environment." It is one thing to
have regret, or sorrow for an act that one committed for the act itself. It is
another thing to say, "I did this and I cannot avoid what I did; I have to
breathe, to eat, to have sex, and to give my body what it needs to exist. But
because of this, I don't receive the things I should from my parents." It
is as if on one side you are not allowed to do these things and on the other
side these things are necessary for human existence. This complete dissociation
is important in Stramonium. The dilemma or drama of Stramonium is that,
"In the end, there is nothing I can do and this kind of situation is
unavoidable; I am obliged to be despised forever. There is no way to overcome
this problem."
Persecution from the inside
If you look at Stramonium, you will find many more
symptoms of persecution in comparison to Belladonna. It is important to
understand what kind of persecution
this is. The persecution of Stramonium is from the
inside; it is not "an external enemy from someone around me; it is a part
of me that I should shoot, but I can't." It is important to understand
this aspect of Stramonium, because you do not see this in Belladonna. The
problem with Stramonium is, "It is something inside of me that I cannot
avoid in order to act, to do, to feel, to perceive, to be human and in the
meantime it is something that is not allowed." This has nothing to do with
something religious or moral or ethical.
It is as if you do not have the right to exist, to be
in contact with your primary needs, as if you are not allowed to live a part of
your life that is indispensable.
Often, you will find this in extremely strict or
conservative environments that have strong ethical ideals and inhibit the
personality. It is easier to recognize this in families where contact with this
more instinctive side is not that easy. Usually these people need to create
around themselves very precise and strong borders
with religious or other type of standards. These
children grow in an environment where it is very clear what you have to do and
what you are not allowed to do.
The problem is that as a child, "I like to eat
chocolate, touch my body, have fun." The problem is that, "If I do
this, I see the eyes of my parent telling me this is not
good." This is one of the main issues of
Stramonium. "If I contact this pleasure in my life, I will not be loved
anymore." This sense of being forsaken, that you find in Stramonium, is
not the issue of Belladonna.
This idea of something inside that is pursuing you is
not an issue in Belladonna.
Primary, preverbal needs and fears
TS: This is confusing because if one of the basic
issues in Stramonium is that they are not allowed to have primary needs, this
does not seem to stand out in my
cases. How does it express itself that they don't feel
they should have something to eat, or a pleasurable relationship? How do you
see that?
MM: I think one of the main reasons that this comes
out in terms of nightmares and all the well-known things for our
Belladonna-like patients is that this stuff
is extremely primary. It occurs in a period of life
that is preverbal, when you cannot use your rational mind to define the
problem. If you talk with a Spider
remedy, they can tell you clearly that, "My
family is impeding me to enjoy a sexual life." They have a mind that is
developed enough to perceive their world
and tell you their story.
When a problem is primary and starts in the beginning
of your life, it seldom comes to your consciousness in a way that can be
described with words, with faces,
with designs. Very often it is a ghost, a terror,
something that is indescribable, something black or whatever your primary mind
can allow you at this age. You do
not have the image or words to represent anything more
at this age. This is why fairy tales are important, because they give a face to
these fears. When the objects
are missing it is just terror. "It will destroy
me because I cannot recognize it."
Every mammal deserves a certain kind of care from his
parents. It is our tragedy that we need to be fed with milk, to be cuddled. Our
process of growth in the
first months after birth is important work that we
will never get a chance to do again. Everyday our system works like a giant
computer putting together all the
sensations, emotions, feelings and organizing it in an
appropriate way so that we know what different sensations mean and the consequences.
If you love a child,
you help him grow into a healthy person. But if you
tell this child that what he needs is not something that he can integrate, that
he will not get the milk he asks
for, this is dreadful. As a mammal, you cannot avoid
feeling that you deserve a kind of empathic, loving reaction. It is not normal
to not have your needs met in
a loving way or to be treated in such a way that
elicits fear.
It is human to have these feeling and needs, but when
treated in a negative way, the translation of this mechanism is that, "I
am not allowed and will be killed
if I ask. I integrate the concept that I ask for a hug
and I receive a knife." The perception of these patients is that their
primary needs are completely unsatisfied.
"What I need is forbidden."
MG: The mythology or delusion of the Stramonium
patient that you outline is very complex. I am trying to develop the idea of
the more primitive version of
this in a newborn. A newborn is in a room, you turn
off the light and leave them alone and they scream and scream. You have to go
and lie next to them and turn
the light on. You give them Stramonium and the problem
goes away. It was a Stramonium state; it worked beautifully. But in such a
small baby, how can you
have this kind of awareness? "Because of my
badness I am being deprived?"
MM: This is not an awareness! It is our delusion that
these mechanisms are psychological. This has nothing to do with psychology.
This is a pre-logic relation with life and much more fundamental than our logic
state. I am evil because I have needs One of the most important issues in
Stramonium is not the sense of guilt that you
can see in Bromium and other remedies, where the
problem is their relation with God. It is something much more primitive. It has
to do with "my right to live,
with my right to exist, to be who I am." It is at
once simple and dramatic.
One greatest problems of Stramonium is how to
integrate two parts that cannot be integrated at all. The idea of Stramonium is
that, "because of my need to exist, because of my primary need, I am evil
becausee I have to express my needs." Belladonna reacts in an angry way
toward their deprivation, but feels if, "I express my anger I will not get
the little amount of attention I feel I deserve."
The problem with Stramonium is different. They feel
that because of their primary needs, they live in the dark side of themselves;
they are in contact and translate their primary needs into something that is
not acceptable. Constantly they have to fight with themselves with their
feeling of being pursued by their own ghosts, because their own enemy is just
their stomach that tells you to eat, to drink or your brain that says,
"You should sleep." For Stramonium, this is difficult to integrate as
they feel this is not acceptable; "I cannot allow this, I cannot integrate
this into myself."
[Paul Herscu]
Sleep
...at that more truthful hour when my eyes closed to
the things of the outer world (on whose frontier intellect and will,
momentarily paralyzed, could no longer strive to rescue me from the cruelty of
my real impressions) reflected, refracted the agonizing annihilation, in the
mysteriously lighted darkness of my organs. World of sleep in which our inner
consciousness placed in bondage to the disturbances of our organs, quickens the
rhythm of heart and breath because a similar dose of terror, sorrow, remorse,
acts with a strength magnified a hundredfold if it is thus injected into our
veins; as soon as, to traverse the arteries of the subterranean city, we have
embarked upon an inward Lethe meandering sixfold, huge solemn forms appear to
us, approach, and glide away, leaving us in tears.
Proust, from Sodomme et Gomorrhe
Along with the mental-emotional realm and the nervous
system, the realm of sleep offers the most insight into the Stramonium cycle.
In fact this area is so rich in confirmatory symptoms that if you have a child
with absolutely no sleep symptoms to verify a prescription of Stramonium, it is
unlikely to be the correct remedy.
That there are so many sleep symptoms is not
surprising, for it is during sleep and in the process of drifting off to sleep,
that the conscious mind finally relinquishes control and the unconscious mind
takes over. It is here, in the night, that everything held in check during the
day will finally be expressed. The intense battle-line between conscious and
unconscious, so carefully drawn throughout the day, shifts during the night, as
one side loses its ability to fight and the other gains in power.
As the images of death increase, the segments having
to do with stillness, with death, grow stronger, and this serves to intensify
the segment of fear in the child.
This battle can be witnessed in three different areas.
The presence of symptoms in any one of these areas can
be used to confirm the need for Stramonium:
• Fears before Sleep
• Nightmares and Night Terrors
• General Sleep Symptoms
Each of these categories will be presented separately,
but first I would like to draw the reader's attention to a valuable book for
understanding children's sleep, Richard Ferber's Solve Your Child's Sleep
Problems, publisher by Simon and Schuster. This book is most helpful in
developing a fuller understanding of sleep cycles and sleep disturbances. I
strongly recommend chapters one, four, and five for parents and clinicians
alike.
Fears Before Sleep
Fear of going to bed is a fairly characteristic
symptom found in most Stramonium children. Many young children will be unable
to voice specific reasons for their fears, but older children will commonly
admit to:
fear of the dark, of monsters, of being left alone,
and such fears as are often associated with movies and stories recently seen or
heard.
A more common cause for bedtime fears, whether the
child verbalizes it or not, is a previous history of terrifying dreams. It is
the terror of repeating such dreams
that makes a Stramonium child fear going to sleep. One
gets the feeling that there is a battle raging within the child between a dark
demonic side and the forces
of light. Each night, there surfaces within the child
an overwhelming sense that, at some deep level, he is about to go through those
same horrible visions—visions of torture, of terror. And so, each night, he
resists his parents' attempts to put him to bed, and even more desperately
resists falling asleep.
Many authorities on sleep disorders believe that
nighttime fears are brought about by some stress or anxiety that has occurred
during the day but only surfaces at night. The stresses may be external in
origin, such as fear of being separated from the mother or the kind of fears
that often accompany a divorce. There may also exist a justifiable fear of
being beaten or violated in some way, which can develop after the child has
been abused. Even one beating can bring on such fear.
Stresses may also be internal in origin. At the time
when the child is developing impulse control, when he wants to misbehave, his
impulsive side may begin to struggle with and fight against his controlling
side. Most children ultimately work this out, but the Stramonium child does
not. In observing the child's attempts to establish control over impulses, the
parent or practitioner will witness the following sequence unfolding in an
introverted Stramonium child: first, he feels a strong impulse to misbehave
(the violent overreaction segment), then guilt over this impulse mounts (the
closing off/introversion segment), so he struggles to control it, which makes
himhypervigilant and anxious about relinquishing
control (the shut down/dead segment). No wonder he becomes increasingly more
fearful of going to bed and has so much trouble falling asleep. He worries and
worries, although quite unable to pinpoint why he is worried in the first
place. In truth, he is worrying about his own impulses. The darkness or monsters
that these children fear are nothing more than their own impulses buried deep
in the unconscious. The horrible nightmares and
night terrors spring out from these buried impulses.
Herman Melville:
“Pierre”
"One trembles to think of that mysterious thing
in the soul, which seems to acknowledge no human jurisdiction, but in spite of
the individual's own
innocent self, will still dream horrid dreams and
mutter unmentionable thoughts."
In the Stramonium child you are likely to see certain
typical behaviors at bedtime. Many of these, in one way or another, exemplify
the rubric:
MIND: Clinging. During the preverbal stage, from eight
to fifteen months, the child may scream when being put to bed. No matter how
hard a mother may try to ensure a smooth, love-filled transition from the
waking state into the sleep state, the outcome is more likely to be such loud
shrieking that it renders her temporarily deaf. Despite continued attempts on
her part to soothe the child, he will shut his eyes tight and scream at the top
of his lungs. This bedtime shrieking often resembles that of
Med. Tub. Lyc. Cham. Borx. Cina or Calc-p.
All the mother's warm, soothing words and the loving
tone of voice do not penetrate through whatever horrible thing it is that
envelops the child at that time.
So every night a push/pull scenario takes place. When
picked up, the little one will struggle and resist and pull away, which only
exasperates

entschlossen (hinterherrennen, jagen); Wurzel (eingebildeter Gegenstand); beseitigen (töten).
Rubriken:
- Sich zu verstecken, Verlangen;
- Furcht vor glitzernden Gegenständen;
- Traurigkeit im Sonnenlicht;
- Abneigung gegen Licht;
- Wahnidee durch helle Gegenstände;
- Furcht, in den Spiegel zu schauen;
- Furcht vor Annäherung anderer;
- Wahnidee, gewohnte Dinge erscheinen sonderbar;
- fühlt sich verlassen;
Gewohnte Dinge erscheinen sonderbar
