Lithium carbonicum Anhang

[Anne Schadde]

The Element Lithium (Li) = metallic element in group 1 of the periodic table with an atomic number 3 and atomic weight of 6.941.

It is a ductile. silvery shining metal. which has an initially yellow later grey tarnished sectional plane. According to its position in group 1 of the periodic table its valence is

1 and its compounds are colourless. Like all alkaline metals (= chemical elements in group 1 of the periodic table with the valence of 1): it is very reactive.

Lithium oxidizes when in contact with air forming the oxide Li2O and the nitride Li3N. It reacts with water by forming hydrogen and Lithium-hydroxide LiOH and

burns with an intense red light forming Lithium-Oxide Li2O. (Lithium compounds burn with a crimson colored flame).

Extracted from Lithium containing minerals (Spodumen. Amblygonite. Lepidolith. Petalite). Lithium can be found only in very small amounts in plant ashes.

Leeser: „Plants of the Ranunculaceae and Solanaceae show particular affinity to Lithium. They contain by far more Lithium than all other plants growing in the same soil“.

It is used in nuclear technology to produce tritium. as an insulator (the Lithium isotope absorbs neutrons). as a reactor coolant. Lithium alloys used for aerospace technologies. in the petroleum

industry. in the ceramic industry. for high capacity batteries. as Lithium salts (Lith-c. Lith-s. Lith-act.) and in psychosis (see „The manic-depressive disease“).

Mogens Schou: „Lithium treatment of the manic-depressive disease“ only the Lithium part of the salts – the Lithium ion - is medicinally active. It is basically irrelevant which salt is used. Because of its position in the periodic system. some properties of Lithium are more closely related to Mg than to Na. Like Pb it can be manufactured into wire or paper-thin laminate.

Combined with water. this metal does not melt into a small pellet like Na and K.

Lith-c. Li2CO3 is a white. light. crystalline powder. which is barely soluble in water and nonsoluble in alcohol. It is one of the few salts that is soluble in cold rather than warm water. Lith-c. is the most important basic substance for the preparation of other Lithium compounds. In medicine part of Lithium preparations since 1949.

The manic-depressive disease:

…the mania

Mania is a period of abnormal euphoria with increased activity. It is combined with irritability. ranging from impulsive reactions to violence. Rapid mental sequences fill

the mind with ideas, which leaves the patient with little desire for sleep. Speech is hurried. ceaseless and often witty and lively with possible hurtful taunts. As part of this incredible enthusiasm. self-assessment is altered.

The extreme selfconfidence without criticism combined with enormous vitality and inhibition leads obviously to major crises. because these patients completely over-extend and. Therefore, ruin themselves financially or destroy relationships and much more. In this phase we see little discernment in regards to the disease. which results in a tremendous burden for family and friends.

In such phases the person frequently reduces food intake and exhausts him or herself physically. Often patients do not feel sick in this stage and refuse treatment.

…the depression

Lithium therapy

In the years after WW II. Lith-m. (= Lithium chloride) used as a substitute for regular table salt (Nat-m.) for patients that were on a low sodium diet due to a kidney or heart disease.

This proved to be dangerous. Cases of (fatal) poisoning were reported. and therapy discontinued.

Since 1949 has been known that Lithium salts can influence the frequency and intensity of manicdepressive psychosis. It has been established that Lithium has an impact

on the cell membranes. Impulse transmission. hormones and metabolism. Lithium preparations were first used in the years after WW II for manic-depressive psychosis.

Because of the experience with poisoning from continuous use. the preparations were initially given with caution.

As the prophylactic use of Lithium was discovered the first psychotherapeutic for treatment of schizophrenic psychoses were instituted. It is also used to reduce the risk

of relaps into this intermittent disease.

John Cade. an Australian psychiatrist, 18 January 1912 – 16 November 1980. used lithium salts on lab guinea-pigs. He found out that they calmed down and were less

reactive towards external stimulants without appearing sleepy. This gave him the idea to treat over-stimulated psychiatric patients. Initially the effects were not steady,

but in some patients the symptoms disappeared within one week. They returned again as soon as the Lithium treatment was discontinued. A further double-blind trial confirmed: Lithium clearly decreases manic euphoria. There is positive proof for the effectiveness of Lithium preventing recidivism in bipolar and unipolar patients.

The benefit of Lithium therapy over other neuroleptic drugs is that Lithium suppresses the manic symptoms without altering other psychological functions noticeably.

The effectiveness. However, sets in slowly. which means after taking approximately 6 - 8 days. It is recommended to use this as a long term treatment. Regular blood tests

are necessary to control side effects and reciprocal actions.

As a prophylaxis. Lithium treatment is supposed to prevent recidivism. which means thereby controlling the disease. The disease cannot be cured by Lithium treatment.

It is of great importance to remember that Lithium works almost exclusively with manic-depressive disease and is of no effect with psychogenic depressions or depressive sadness as part of a neurosis.

Lithium pills consisting of Lith-c.. Lith-s.. Lithium aspartate or Lith-acet. Because only Lithium is an active ingredient. the compound is of minor importance.

…pharmacology and toxicology

Lithium salts are reabsorbed in the intestines when taken orally. As mentioned above, using Lithium containing diet salts in a Natrium chloride (table salt) free diet produced poisoning. The symptoms of poisoning appeared in a state of table salt deficiency and improved when table salt was given. Oral intake of Lithium salts in large doses without elimination of table salt at the same time leads to an increased diuresis with secretion of high amounts of cations. mainly Na+. Signs of poisoning may arise in cases of

table salt deficiency. intercurrent diseases. stress situations. or massive Lithium intake.

Side effects and intoxications that appear in treatment with Lithium preparations:

Physical changes Siehe Lith-c.

Existing provings:

C. Hering: first provings. He collected many symptoms of the urinary tract. including frequent urination. burning in the urethra. cloudy urine containing mucus deposits

and red-brown sediments. as well as dark caustic urine. In addition to the diathesis of increased uric acid output. he stresses a rheumatic gouty component with stiffness

of the body. itching around the joints, swelling of finger and toe joints. and weakness of knees and back. Worth mentioning cardiac complaints that are < before urination

and end after urination.

As with Nat-c. dyspeptic complaints like nausea, stomach problems and headache appear.

The symptoms collected in Herings provings are repeated in other materia medicas and new experiences and cases are added: Choudhuri’s „Study of Materia Medica“.

Hale’s „Materia Medica“. Farrington and Allen’s „Encyclopedia“. As part of our summary of unusual symptoms we will consider the symptoms that were collected in

the old homeopathic provings and can be confirmed in this present proving.

The English version of the complete repertory 4.5 in MacRepertory11 lists 948 symptoms (1999 edition). which were collected from provings up to that date.

New proving

The proving of Lith-c. conducted with colleagues from the „School of Homeopathy“ of the Homöopathie-Forum in Gauting, Germany as a self experiment by 12

provers in the course of the 1994/95 curriculum.

Themes of the proving

According to § 111 of the Organon the homeopathic proving tries to discover what kind of reliable disease symptoms “each substance according to its peculiarity” is able

to engender. Which are the “special. uncommon. odd. and distinguishing (characteristic) signs” of this present homeopathic proving according to 154 of the Organon?

The following summary is a working hypothesis. which tries to put the themes of this new proving into a context and (if possible) to compare them with the symptoms

of older sources (marked OS. see literature index) taken from the repertory. In context with some symptoms we refer to the pharmacology and toxicology (see relevant chapter).

[Elizabeth Adalian]

I have always wondered why Lithium carbonicum is not a major polychrest in homeopathy given that its significance in orthodox medicine is almost iconic. This does not preclude the fact that its impact on physical organs such as the heart and kidneys can be harmful when taken in material doses – even though it is not a drug but a mineral

and is found in the earth. in seawater. and in trace amounts in most plants and animals. In fact. no unique symptoms for this remedy appear in the ‘Mind’ section of the repertory. and very few in the physical symptom’s categories (Murphy. 2005). Its written picture is nebulous in what seems to be a very significant homeopathic remedy.

As a homeopathic remedy. Lithium carb acts by resetting the circadian clock. Today. many people suffer from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) in the northern hemisphere.

so this remedy may easily come into its own in these cases with other vital confirmatory indications. (See rubric ‘Seasonal. affective disorder’. Aur-met. Carc. Melat. Phos. Pineal. Sol. Stram. Syph.); (Lithium carb is not included in this rubric.)

Nowadays. many of us are exposed to considerable amounts of blue light through cell phones. computers. and the greater environment. I consider this to be another reason why this remedy is increasingly significant for the current age. Blue light may be an important contributing factor in why insomnia has reached almost epidemic proportions

in society in recent years. Maternal melatonin crosses the placenta and enters the foetal circulation – therefore circadian sleep patterns actually begin before birth. Even though the foetus is not exposed to light from outside the womb and cannot tell when it is night or day. the mother is communicating this information to her baby. It has been found that these signals from the mother will actually stimulate the foetus to mirror their mother’s circadian cycles. (This emphasises the importance of treating the mother homeopathically before conception.) Most of Steven Reppert’s work at Harvard University was carried out on mice and rats. which mirror their mother’s circadian patterns quite closely to humans. It was found that the mother’s fluctuating melatonin levels signal the rhythm of life beyond the womb (Dement. 1999).

[Jan Scholten]

His work on the periodic table. puts this remedy in Stage 1 of the carbon series (1993). This relates to issues such as ‘the ego’. ‘self-worth’. borderline. and ‘child’.

He describes Lithium carb as ‘impulsive’. ‘changeable’. ‘weak-willed’. ‘suggestible’. ‘manic- depressive’. ‘a baby’. and ‘isolated’. Murphy’s repertory does not include

Lithium carb in the following rubrics which. perhaps. it should:

‘changeable. fickle’ (80 remedies) ACON. alum. aur. BELL. CALC-P. carc. cham. cimic. CINA. cocc. coff. CROC. IGN. kali-c. lach. lyc. MERC. mez. NUX-M.

nux v. PETR. PLAT-met. PULS. sars. SEP. stann. stram. TUB. valer.

‘confidence. lacking. no self esteem’ (105 remedies) AMBR. aml-n. ANAC. arg-n. ars. AUR. BAR- C. bry. calc. CALC-F. CARC. chin. gels. kali-c. KALI-P. lac-c.

LAC-H. LYC. med. nat-m. nux-v. PETR. phos. PSOR. puls. rhus-t. SIL. STAPH. thuj.

‘isolation. feelings’ (46 remedies) ALCO. anac. androc. anh. arg-n. AUR. lac-h. NAT-M. PLAT. PULS. THUJ.

‘weak. personality’ (5 remedies) aids. caust. LYC. sil. staph.

Lithium does. however. appear in the following rubrics. although in the bromatum derivative in the final rubric:

‘abandoned. forsaken. feelings’ (105) arg-n. ars. AUR. aur-m-n. aur-s. calc. carc. choc. cycl. ign. lach. LAC-H. (lith-c in plain type). mag-c. mag-m. MENY. merc. nat-c. NAT-M. phos. plat. PSOR. PULS. sac-alb. sep. stram. thuj.

‘bipolar. disorder’ (37 remedies) anac. aur. CARC. con. hyos. kali-br. LACH. LITH-C. MED. nat-s. STAPH. verat.

‘bipolar. disorder. arthritis. with’ (1 remedy) lith-c.

‘helplessness. feelings’ (43 remedies) ARS. Aur-met. calad. ferr-met. GELS. lith-c. LYC. ph-ac. phos. PULS. SIL.

‘impulsive. behaviour’ (49 remedies) anac. androc. ARG-N. ars. aur-met. aur-m- n. cic. coloc. IGN. lith-c. med. nat-m. nux-v. podo. PULS. stram. tub.

Sleep section: ‘insomnia. persistent’ (8 remedies) carc. coff. coffin. cupr-ar. kali-br. lith-brom. thuj. uran-n.

Remedies which compare with these distinguishing features include Anac. Aur-met. Croc-s. Lycopodium (to which it is complementary). Manc. Merc-v. and Puls.

It seems that people needing this and related remedies in Stage 1 of the periodic table have not yet stepped forward to meet their life’s challenges. Homeopathic philosophy confirms findings that those who do not reach out to others more easily succumb to mood disorders such as bi-polar disease – which is becoming increasingly prevalent at

this time. Compounded with this. more and more people nowadays live alone with little face-to-face contact with others. Mental health issues are generally on the rise and medicinal drugs are proving to be ineffective and -at times- dangerous. not only to the sufferer but also to those around them through violent reactions.

Somatisation of these mood disorders may take place in the form of rheumatic symptoms. especially affecting the shoulders and small joints (fibromyalgia). which could

be a reflex from the heart. This phenomenon occurs especially when little outlet for emotions is allowed. possibly from messages received from their carers when young and

is particularly the case in cultures with no awareness of the importance of emotional expression. It could be an issue of ‘alexithymia’ where no words for emotions can be found (Adalian. 2017). This can lead to possible pathology [in the form of different states on the Spectrum (addiction. ADHD. anorexia. OCD. and Alzheimer’s disease)

(history of depression. head injury. or medicinal drugs). Other remedies which compare here include Hell-n. Nat-s. and Rhus-t. This is why emotional life needs to be explored in case-taking when patients present with such physical symptoms.

Despite lack of emotional expression. there is marked over-sensitivity on the physical level in Lith-c. (as also seen in Merc-v.). This contributes to their distance from other people as they prefer to suffer in silence. A manic phase may take over in the form of ritualistic behaviour. Again. this remedy could well be added to the 12 remedies in the appropriate rubric ‘ritualistic. behaviour’. The two remedies in italics are Arg-n. and Rhus-t. These symptoms are a sign of the syphilitic miasm, along with ‘aggravation at night’ – like Aur-met  and Merc-v. The overall symptoms also suggest an affinity with the sycotic miasm.

Chronic cystitis and retention of urine can occur. (Lithium carb appears in the rubric for cystitis in plain type.) In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). the bladder symbolises grief and it is no surprise that this inexpressive remedy manifests such symptoms. Like the rheumatic symptoms. grief may be manifested through the heart connection in this remedy picture. If depression is treated when the individual is young. many issues can be circumvented later in life at vital stages of development. A rising issue is post-natal depression which can affect future generations if left untreated. Lithium carb does not occur in the following rubric. but I believe there is a good case for its inclusion. and it should also be considered for post-natal psychosis: – ‘depression. childbirth. after’ (24 remedies) agn. anac. Aur-met. aur-m. cimic. con. kali-br. lach. lil-t. psor. puls. SEP. SULPH. tub. verat. verat-v. Lithium carb could be added to the rubric for: ‘insanity. childbirth. after’ (36 remedies) aur-met. bell. camph. cann-i. chlol. cimic. cupr. cupr-acet. hyos. kali-bi. lyc. nux-v. petr. plat-met. puls. sec. stram. sulph. verat. This pathology could mean separation between the mother and child (during conventional treatment) which may create bonding issues later in their joint relationship.

Other known indications for Lith-c. in its material form include: Migraines. chronic headaches. cluster headaches. hyperthyroidism. insomnia. pre-menstrual syndrome. menopause difficulties and strokes. People who live in high lithium areas live longer. with less criminality. fewer suicides. and better general mental health. enhancing serotonin production. Lithium believed to reduce brain shrinkage by stimulating the brain cells. It also helps to detoxify heavy metals including aluminium. arsenic. cadmium. lead and mercury (Montana. 2016). Patients needing this remedy may benefit from receiving fatty acids with their treatment. such is the chronic shortfall they suffer from in this depletion.

Conclusion

Apart from its possible application in constitutional treatment. it could be useful for weaning patients off not only lithium in drugs. but also other psychiatric drugs such as Prozac. Other derivatives include Lithium bromatum. Lithium fluoratum. Lithium iodatum. and Lithium muriaticum. The homeopathic back-up of Lithium carb could prevent suicide or violence in such cases as this transition takes place. This is another reason why Lithium carb as a homeopathic remedy should be upgraded in the understanding of homeopaths to support not only the suffering individual. but also to protect society at large.

Note that Aurum is the highest scoring contender with Lithium carbonicum. It shares with it many of the emotional symptoms as well as the symptoms of cluster headaches and those related to the heart. Both remedies match the syphilitic miasm in their manifestation. It is significant that Lithium carbonicum appears in certain rubrics although usually only in plain type. This is because it is under-represented in the repertory.
