Beeindruckt von Größe und Stärke – und merkt dabei gar nicht, dass er selber beeindruckend groß ist. Höher, größer, schneller, weiter – das ist der amerikanische Traum, und Mammutbaum lebt ihn.
Einerseits liebt er die Bühne, andererseits quälen ihn Selbstzweifel, einerseits liebt er das Fliegen, andererseits hat er Höhenangst. Alles rund ums Feuer ist für ihn von Interesse.
Ein Gewächs aus der Saurierzeit, möchte gern ewig jung bleiben (Jugendwahn) – und auch das passt zu Amerika, denn Anti-Aging wurde dort erfunden. Er braucht eine angesehene Fassade, die nach außen hin präsentabel ist. Botanik
Seit dem warmen Paläozoicum vor 160 Milj. Jahren wuchsen Sequoiadendren in Europa/Asien und Nordamerika. Vor rund 7 Milj. Jahren zogen sich die Mammutbäume auf das jetzige Gebiet in Kalifornien zurück. Die Bäume leben in einem 420 km langen Gürtel/der maximal 24 km breit ist/auf den Westhängen der Sierra Nevada in Höhen zwischen 1370 und 2560 m ü. M. in 75 verschieden großen Ansiedlungen (groves) von ½ bis 1600 Hektar/zusammen mit Kiefern/Fichten/Eiben/Tannen und anderen Bäumen/auch der kalifornischen Eiche. Ältere Bäume dominieren die Waldstruktur und Ökologie. Die Bäume sind vital und konkurrenzfähig. Dort herrscht ein feuchtes Klima mit trockenen Sommern/der Großteil der Niederschläge kommt als Schnee. Grundwasser im trockenen Sommer ist essentiell. Anpflanzungen gibt es in Europa und dem östlichen Nordamerika.
Die Baumrinde ist sehr feuerresistent. Die dicke/zimtbraune Rinde enthält Tannin (= natürlichen Feuerlöscher/Pilz- und Käferabweiser). Die äußere Rindenschicht ist 60 cm o. mehr ohne Harz. "General Shermans" Rindenschicht sei 1,20 m dick. Brandlöcher bilden Höhlen für Tiere/gefährden den Mammutbaum kaum/sie brauchen die Waldfeuer, die stark genug sein müssen um den Wald aufzuräumen und zu reinigen/die Kronen zu lichten und damit Raum für das weitere Wachstum zu schaffen. Keime gehen auf mineralischem Boden an/nicht wenn er schon bewachsen ist.
Zapfen geben den Samen nur bei extremer Hitze. frei. Die Zapfen sind klein/bis zu 9 cm lang/brauchen mehr als 2 Jahre zur Reife und können 20 Jahre am Baum verbleiben. Männliche und weibliche Blüten wachsen getrennt auf Ästen desselben Baumes (einhäusig). Sie sind Zwitter. Im Schnitt bildet der Baum 1500 Zapfen pro Jahr. So kann ein gestandener Baum 40.000 Zapfen aufweisen. Ein Drittel ist trocken/nutzlos = ohne Samen. Die anderen sind grün und geschlossen/warten auf ein starkes Feuer o. den Langhornkäfer (Phymatodes nitidus) um sich zum Öffnen und Samenausstoß stimulieren zu lassen. Auch eine Eichhörnchenart (Tamiasciurus douglasii) frisst an den Zapfen, die dann Samen fallen lassen. Ca. 200 sehr leichte Samen sind in einem Zapfen. Diese keimen/wenn sie 1 cm im Boden sind/= Lichtkeimer.
