Carcinosinum

The most important Mental Symptoms of Carcinosin
are:
Suicidal tendencies; retarded or mentally defective children (Clarke);
dullness of mind, disinterested, difficult concentration with the consequential
irritability (Templeton); fears and lasting dreads, reaching terror (Foubister); Unhappiness, which is more pronounced than
Kent’s “discontented”; anticipation with anguish, excessive sense of duty
(conscious-Ars); obstinate; desire of travelling
(Tub); oversensitive to music with a pronounced sense of rhythm and desire for
dancing in children, like Sepia; enjoyment watching a thunderstorm; markedly
sympathetic (Foubister); mentally overdeveloped and
precocious children (Pachero).
Please note here the tendency of ambivalence (bipolarity) of the nosode, which is one of its basic peculiarities. Then fear
of darkness; bashful, oversensitive to reprimand (Med); fear of dogs (Tub) and
animals in general; upset by scare. Frequent fright in children (Foubister); excessive need of affection. This symptom is
also very marked in
Puls. and Phos., but
while the first keeps the tenderness for himself with some selfishness and is
reluctant to return it, the second lavishes in good measure the received love.
Well, the Carcinosin resembles the last one and not
the Pulsatilla. Great continual weariness with
extreme irritability, < awakening; repulse to any activity, even to the most
cherished, which I clearly observed myself, as well as lack of interest.
The most important General Symptoms are:
The knee-elbow position in sleep, this symptom figures in Kent’s
Repertory only with Med; Foubister, though relates
this position with Carcinosin, Antecedents of severe
whooping cough +/o. severe pneumonia in the first childhood (Foubister) and diffuse adenopathies
with fever. An extremely useful medicine, both in acute stage and in
those patients in whom the condition persists for months and sometimes
years.
Of glandular fever, it is to say acute infective Mononeucleosis.
The Carcinosin action is based here on the “similitude
of malignancy with localized groups of enlarged lymph glands”. (Action was
clinically confirmed by Dorothy J Cooper).
Another important general symptom is the influence of sea air, < +/o.
> like Nat-m. Here we observe again the peculiar bipolarity of Carcinosin. Tendency to formation of keloid
scars which it not only cures, but also prevents, reducing incidence, when
given pre-operatively, to patients undergoing plastic surgery (Paschero).
Cyclical morning nausea and diarrhoeas with floating excrements;
invincible anorexia, occipital headache with radiation to the base of skull and
to the nape, worse when awakening. Weakness and weariness with numbed legs, >
after short sleep (Hui Bon Hoa-France).
Constipation with complete absence of desire, like Opium (Templeton/Joly).
Cravings and aversions: Foubister mentioned
five elements which are: salt, milk, eggs, fruit and fat meat. There may be a
craving or an aversion to any or anyone of them, making it evident again that a
craving for any of these elements during childhood, changes into a later
aversion, or vice-versa.
The aversion or desire of salt, fruit, milk and fat meat was confirmed
by Pierre Schmidt, who claimed also a craving of chocolate. Craving of butter,
sweets and sugar
“to the point of wanting to eat nothing except sugar” in children, was
described by Pashero. Desire for smoked meat.
Sleep: Another position of Carcinosin,
is on the dorsum with hands up (Puls.). Insomnia characterized
by: trouble in getting to sleep; awakening in terror; awakening due
to exciting dreams; excessive ideation; impossibility in falling asleep
again when awakened during the night. Causalities: personal, hereditary and
collateral antecedents; hereditary history of tuberculosis, diabetes +/o.
pernicious anemia (Foubister);
hereditary syphilis.
Carcinosin patients are very fragile people
who undermine their own confidence by pleasing others while suppressing their
own wishes. They desire for harmony in the
family and the world and have an acutely felt connection to suffering
that will eventually be their downfall.
They feel guilty to take time off, which leads to suppressed anger,
which eventually leads to physical illness. The greatest injustice is that “I
am never accepted the way I am”. They are victims of prolonged suppressions,
repressions, tensions, struggle and unhappiness.
Cancer is often preceded by fear of cancer. Carcinosins
are perfectionist, industrious, artistic, nature lover, with literary, poetic
bent, creative, affectionate, romantic, frank, mild people with a good sense of
responsibility. Sentimental and sensitive to reprimands.
They are lonely individuals who do not like consolation. Ailments from
silent grief, rudeness, early responsibility, menopause, head trauma,
suppressed anger and long lasting domination.
A personal history will contain insomnia since childhood or frequent
pneumonia in early childhood. Nat-m. C to Carcinosin.
Both have lack of emotional nourishment in early life.

Understanding The Cancer Script: ‘Dying To Be Me’ & The Homeopathic
Remedy ‘Carcinosinum’
The author finds that the mental state of a cancer patient who
experienced a near-death experience, resembles the remedy picture of Carcinosin.
I was fascinated by the book ‘Dying To Be Me’ by Anita Moorjani. It
describes her recovery from terminal stage lymphoma cancer (she was brought
into the hospital comatose with multiple organ failures) after she experienced
what she terms a ‘Near Death Experience (= NDE)’. In the state of NDE, she
discovers the ‘real’ cause of her cancer. This realisation and surrender
(letting go!) leads to the awareness of her intrinsic worth, and sets off a
chain of metabolic resets of her system. As a result she recovers within weeks
without a trace of cancer in her body, a miracle in medical terms.
The concept of NDE although fascinating is open to debate as the whole
explanation given by those who experience it varies and is often saturated with
the belief system one is brought up with. Yet, the fact is, that this lady who
was reduced to skin and bones recovered within 3-4 weeks, and was declared
cancer free. In her state of NDE, Anita
becomes aware of what caused her cancer and in this Aha! moment she decides to
return into her body, convinced that she is now healed.
The chapter ‘Why I Got Sick…and Healed’ intrigued me the most because it
allowed me to see and confirm the theme of the homeopathic remedy Carcinosinum (prepared from cancerous breast tissue). The remedy reflects the very theme and
symptoms that Anita reported.
The author Anita grew up in a conservative Indian family with a strict
father and lived in an orthodox community. Attitudes and social behaviour were
regimented. The gender bias about girls and the racial bias and humiliation in
a dominant ‘white’ school in Hong Kong, led to personality adaptation contrary
to the intrinsic nature of the author. Anita’s temperament was impacted and she
internalised the situation, which may have lead to her cancer.
Here are a few quotes from the chapter that set the basis for this
discussion.
“I was a people pleaser and feared disapproval.” “Everything I did was
designed to win approval”. “I realised how harshly I’d treated myself and
judged myself throughout my life.” “I believe that my cancer was related to my
self-identity, and it feels as though it was my body’s way of telling me that
my soul was grieving for the loss of its own worth – of its identity.”
It is interesting to observe that the above statements parallel the
theme of the homeopathic remedy Carcinosinum.
Let’s delve into ‘Irritation’ that could be considered as a cause or
trigger for cancer. This irritation could be because of substance abuse or
mental/emotional abuse. It was Rudolf
Virchow, known as the father of modern pathology, who suggested that cancer was
caused by severe irritation in the tissues, and his theory came to be known as
chronic irritation theory.
We know that cells, when exposed to constant irritation, react by
getting inflamed. When this inflammation is not checked, a process of induration or hardening sets in around the affected cells,
as the body’s attempt to protect itself. The cells move on to the next stage –
ulceration and gangrene sets in, or the cells may simply go berserk and
proliferate rapidly into what we term cancer.
This process can be explained with the example of an irritation caused
by wearing new shoes that are too tight.
The tight shoe irritates the toes, which leads to inflammation. You
continue wearing them and you then have induration or
hardening of the skin – what you commonly refer to as a corn. Now you persist
in wearing the shoes and the corn ulcerates.
Other types of injuries may also turn cancerous, such as you will find
in the case of mouth cancer among tobacco consumers.
We observe that the same irritation is also seen on the mental/emotional
plane. Can the irritability that is suppressed for a prolonged period trigger
cancer? Below are the mental/emotional elements of mental “irritation” noted in
the symptoms of the nosode Carcinosin.
The proving of ‘Carcinosinum’ presents the
following symptoms that are often seen in cancer patients. The quotes by the
author, Anita Moorjani, can be presented as a diagram
and co-related with some of the rubrics that follow.

Note: This paper is not meant to
suggest that Carcinosinum is a cure for all cancers.
The remedy does possess the ability to positively influence some cancers (and
other maladies) when symptoms
agree as per homeopathic laws.
Notes:
Virchow was the first to correctly link the origin of cancers from
otherwise normal cells. (His teacher Müller had
proposed that cancers originated from special cells which he called blastema. In 1855, he suggested that cancers arise from the
activation of dormant cells (perhaps similar to cells now known as stem cells)
present in mature tissue Virchow believed that cancer is caused by severe irritation
in the tissues, and his theory came to be known as chronic irritation theory.
He thought, rather wrongly, that the irritation spread in the form of liquid so
that cancer rapidly increases His theory was largely ignored, as he was proved
wrong and that it was not by liquid, but by metastasis
of the already cancerous cells that cancers spread. (First described by
Karl Thiersch in the 1860s.) But he made a crucial
observation that certain cancers (carcinoma in modern sense) were inherently
associated with white blood cells (which are now called macrophages) that
produced irritation (inflammation). It was only towards the end of the 20th
century that Virchow’s theory was taken seriously. It was realised that
specific cancers (including those of mesothelioma,
lung, prostate, bladder, pancreatic, cervical, esophageal,
melanoma, and head and neck) are indeed strongly associated with long-term
inflammation. In addition it became clear that long-term use of
anti-inflammatory drugs, such as aspirin, reduced cancer risk. Experiment also
shows that drugs that block inflammation simultaneously inhibit tumour
formation and development.
[Christiane Petras]
Depressionen in jedem Stadium.
Allgemein schwaches Bindegewebe; Bänderschwäche an jedem erdenklichen Ort, z.B.
No 7
[Misha Norland]
Key concept: I conform to the group’s expectations, I must be perfect,
or I rebel.
Cancerous tumors are characterized by an
over-abundant proliferation of cells of one type. Cancer cells are regressive,
having reverted to a less differentiated state than normal cells. Within the tumor,
each cell conforms to its neighbor like bricks
in a wall. However, from the point of view of the organism as a whole, the
cells are rebellious and unruly. There is an escalating struggle between the
body, which wishes to maintain its integrity and proper functioning, and the tumor, which subverts.
Cancer cells are like a mono-culture. In a healthy organism, groups of
differing cells cooperate together, while in cancerous tissue, the conformity
of structure within the tumor allows no functional
interfacing with surrounding tissues. Although it is genetically conforming
(and can therefore bypass normal immune defense
strategies), it is foreign (rebellious).
Miasmatically, Carcinosin
stands midway between Sycosis and Syphilis. From a
psychological standpoint, the Sycotic theme
translates into striving to have more, do more and be more. Because of the
conflict that arises between conscience and the Sycotic’s
extravagant nature, they characteristically develop a deep sense of guilt and
cover-up. Carcinosin symptoms which exemplify this
include secretiveness and self-reproach. The Syphilitic miasm
leads to the destructive expressions often exhibited by Carcinosin
children and teenagers, such as rudeness and defiance. Carcinosin’s
self-destructive impulses include picking at themselves, both physically in the
form of self-harming, and mentally in the form of endlessly revisiting
injustices, wrongs and slights, sleeplessness, fear of cancer, and
fastidiousness. These concerns and habits may be kept under wraps. It is usual
for patients requiring Carcinosin, should they be
fastidious, to express this as a drive for matching things. In children, and
atypically, in some adults, the other polarity may be seen (predominantly
Syphilitic) – smashing things up and creating mayhem.
Carcinosin children and teenagers fall into
two types: rebellious and conforming. The rebellious type shows anger at
reprimand, defiance, obstinacy and love of travel – all reminiscent of Tuberculinum. These types may be passionate and given to
temper tantrums when opposed. They have strong desire natures and often exhibit
premature sexual interest. Both types typically have a strong reaction to
rhythm and music. The conforming type of Carcinosin,
faced with heavy demands from authority figures, makes huge efforts to do well.
Correct performance is deemed imperative for success. Carcinosin
is one of very few remedies in the rubric, “Long history of domination by
others”. It is invaluable for children who cannot hold their own and are
bullied at school. After bullying, they may develop physical symptoms. They are
over-sensitive to taunts, rudeness and criticism, and take offence easily.
However, these types do not become aggressive or answer back – they simply
retreat and brood silently. In an attempt to fend off criticism before it is
offered, they may develop perfectionism and neurotic fastidiousness. Carcinosin is well indicated in ailments of anticipation,
typically sleeplessness before an event, and excessive anxiety before
performance.

Die Faktoren, die eine Krebsentstehung begünstigen
[(Umwelt/Ernährung/Medikamente/Hormone) o. (Depressionen/mangelndes
hausärztlichen Betreuung, also quasi von Geburt an), jemals an Krebs erkrankt
dass man einen Standpunkt beziehen muss. Gerade daran aber mangelt es ihnen;
In
erfreuen.
Eine besondere Vorliebe hat der Carc.-Mensch
für das Reisen. Er bevorzugt das Meer. Dabei erlebt er entweder eine deutliche
Besserung aller Beschwerden o. eine deutliche Verschlimmerung. In England z.B.
was ihre Gleichgewichtsbestrebungen in Frage stellt).
entsprechen. Weniger bekannt sind jene Carc.-Menschen,

The Cycle of Carcinosin
Carcinosin was always a difficult remedy for
me to understand. Partly, this was due to the lack of information on the remedy.
Partly it was due to the fact that much of information found was contradictory
to itself. And partly it was difficult because the information found was so
nebulous that it seemed similar to so many other remedies. Sometimes it looked
like Nat-m., sometimes like Phos. Staph. Lach. or Tub.
This confusion makes some homeopaths prescribe this remedy rarely, where
as others prescribe it daily. Both can not be right. The intense disparity
within the remedy that seems to make it so confusing actually makes it easier
to understand once we see how the cycle of the remedy unfolds.
Understanding Remedies through
Cycles and Segments
As readers of this journal know, for the last number of years Paul Herscu ND, has been developing a theory which advocates
looking at remedies as a cycle of segments. Each segment represents an idea
which encompasses many of the symptoms found in patients needing that remedy,
as well as those symptoms recorded in the materia medicas for that remedy. There are generally between 4-6 segments
for each remedy.
When the segments are all taken together, they cover all the symptoms of
that remedy. This is especially useful, as it helps explain contradictory
symptoms effectively.
Each segment or fundamental idea leads to the next and the next and the
next, until the last idea leads back to the first. This is the nature of
chronic disease. The patient is in a cycle of pathology that they can't escape.
This cycle prevents the vital force from allowing them to heal.
Notice that the symptoms which are noted in the following cycle of Carcinosin include those from the mental/emotional,
general, and physical realms. The cycle of a remedy represents the untunement of the vital force. That untunement
is dynamic. It moves from segment to segment. As it moves it creates symptoms
at all levels which are reflections of the untunement
of the vital force.
Fear
In this part of the cycle the Carcinosin
patient is fearful. They have fear of being alone, of animals, of the future,
of insects, mirrors, and spiders. They have fears about their health, riding
fast. They have ailments from anticipation. This fear is really about their
ability to make their way in the world. If they can't affect change in their
own life, literally everything seems threatening, uncontrollable. Consciously
or unconsciously they choose a strategy for survival which pushes them to the
next part of the cycle.
Let themselves be taken care of if you have a fear about your own
ability to make your way in the world, the easiest thing is to let someone else
do it for you. You let them take care of you. Often this is a pattern developed
in childhood. An overbearing parent may 'train' the patient to be dependent, by
not encouraging them to make their own decisions, by constantly doing things
for them, or by giving them the message that they are not capable of doing
things for themselves.
So the symptoms that fit this portion of the cycle are: > company,
loves affection, affectionate, propensity for caresses, smiling, desires to be
carried, resignation, desire for rocking, and sociability.
Also included in this segment are the myriad of things that tend to take
care of them i.e. ameliorate them. > Seaside air, pain lower limbs >
warmth of bed, > music, throat pain > warm drinks, everything seems to
ameliorate them. They are letting themselves be taken care of. They take
whatever they are given and it makes them feel better.
They even desire foods which are comfort oriented: butter, chocolate,
delicacies, eggs, fruit, milk, sweets, sugar. You can almost imagine their
mother giving them all their favorite comfort foods.
Later on in life, they still need to be taken care of and still find comfort in
the same foods.
Inwardness
As Herscu explains in his theory of
overreaction, you often get what you want but the intensity makes it
insupportable. For example, Puls. desires
consolation/to be carried/rocked and loved up/to
be smothered by others and yet they develop a fear of suffocation.
Likewise, because Carsinosin wants to be taken
care of, they have to submit their will to the will of the person who is doing
the caretaking. They begin the process of losing their sense of self, not
really knowing themselves as much as they should, not being a solid individual.
They hear only the vague voice of who they really are, who they were meant to
be. I think this is the famed keynote symptom for the remedy. It is not just
suppression from the parent, but rather the loss of self that results from that
suppression. Here they may be mistaken for Staph. or Nat-m. So they are quiet
and inward. They tend to hold on to their feelings in this phase, to suppress
them. They don't speak out. Things dwell and swell up inside of them.
A telltale symptom is: abdominal pain, > bending double. They bend
over and take whatever they are given in order to feel better. Or sleep
position on knees with face forced into the pillow. This pretty much describes
the passivity. Yet it's more than just passivity. It's the next step. The overattention or being taken care of is beginning to close
in on them. It's beginning to grate, be cloying.
But they can't say anything. They just keep it in and swell up.
Other specific symptoms include: cautious, reserved, responsive
without interest, taciturn, suppresses his desires, aversion to company, anger with
silent grief, suppressed grief, and answers in monosyllables.
Physical symptoms which reflect the same idea are: styes of eyes, stiffness of lower jaw, abdomen
constriction, rectum constriction, constriction of the heart, chest swelling of
mammae before menses, extremity pain, < motion.
They are held in, constricted, can't move, swollen, and so are their
physical symptoms. They can only take this "holding on" for so long
before they move to the next segment.
Resentment
They get resentful. They can't hold it in completely any more. They
become contradictory. Three symptoms which reveal this idea are: delusions she
has suffered wrong, unhappiness due to influence of others, and delusions arms
do not belong to her. She can't do what she wants. Her arms, which she uses to
accomplish things, can't be used to do what she wants. She is at the mercy of
someone else - and she resents it.
Other symptoms include: contradictory states, capricious, intolerance of
contradiction, disobedience, quarrelsome, ailments from domination, ailments
from reproaches, discontented, disgust, anger at his mistakes, remorse,
sensitive to reprimands, dreams of murder, < conversation.
Anything that makes them feel closed in bothers them. They have fear in
narrow places or riding in a carriage (closed in). At this phase, everything
that looks like consolation or affection makes them worse: <
consolation/seaside. Eggs, fruit, and milk were comforting foods. Now they
either are averse to, or < by them.
We see that the cycle explains the divergent < and > by the
same modalities. During the 'letting themselves be taken care of' segment of
the cycle, these things make them feel better.
In the 'resentment' segment of the cycle they make the patient feel
worse.
Frenetic breaking out
Finally they have to break out. They are excitable, sexually intense,
love to move. They are on their own. They finally can take care of themselves.
Symptoms incl.: Dancing, desire for travel, restlessness, blueness of the
sclera, runs about, disposition to masturbate, cheerful when it thunders and lightnings, extremity pain > motion. They are finally
alive.
But the excitability increases. You have the symptoms: starting
from noise, talking in sleep, shrieking at night, weeping, weeping at trifles,
tics, twitching of eyelids, sleeplessness, destructiveness in children, biting
fingers, and tearing himself.
They start taking care of others. These rubrics include: Caring for
others, too much of a sense of duty, anxiety about family, full of cares for
others, anxiety for others.
They do many things for others, looking like Phos.
or Caus.
Cancerous affectations are found here as the cells lose cancer
suppressing ability and proliferate with all the energy possible-with so much
vitality that it can kill the rest of the body. It is in a way a reaction to
having been suppressed for so long before. In the struggle for freedom, for
growth and individuality, the person overshoots and creates too much, just as
what happened with the personality.
Finally it is just too much activity. They move to the next segment of
the cycle.
Breakdown/weakness
They break down and are weak, sad. Symptoms of the breakdown are:
schizophrenia, suicidal disposition, mouth aphthae,
ulcerations, and bleeding. The effects of cancer can be found here. The
weakness is seen with the following symptoms: mind development arrested,
retardation, dullness, concentration difficult, want of self confidence,
sadness, weakness of eyes, rectum prolapse, sexual
desire diminished, extremities, weakness thigh. Too weak to walk, or to talk.
Expending so much energy has left a hole in them, has weakened them so
much so that they can feel sensitive to the outside world. So much so that they
resemble Phos. or Puls. or
occasionally Med.
They feel other's pains, but other's beauty as well. Just as Phosphorus
feels the music, sees the colors so vibrantly, so too
doesCarcinosin. But it is a sensitivity that can come
from weakness and from being too open. And so, the breakdown and weakness push
them back into being fearful, and the cycle is back to the beginning and starts
around one more time.
Looking at the cycle of Carcinosin explains a
few things.
1st. mentioned above, it
explains why at one segment of the cycle certain symptoms ameliorate and, at
another segment of the cycle, the same modalities aggravate. Similarly, it
explains why, at one segment they desire a certain food, at another segment
they are averse to the same food. Compare the modalities and food cravings of
the 'let themselves be taken care of' segment with those of the 'resentment'
segment.
2nd.
it allows us to see how Carcinosin can look like
other remedies. During the 'inward' part of the cycle they can easily look like
Nat-m. During the frenetic part of the cycle they can look like Phos., Tub. or Lach. During the
"inwardness, holding on" and 'resentment' parts of the cycle they can
look like Staph. Taking other parts of the cycle they can look like other
remedies. The beauty of looking at remedies through the cycles and segments is
that you can see how it fits together to form a coherent picture of Carcinosin.
3rd.
you can easily see how the many descriptions of Carcinosin
have come by. It depends on the portion of the cycle the patient was in when
the homeopath treated them, and on what the homeopath focused on.
4th.
confusion in the literature does not mean that we should not give this remedy,
but that we should work our way through it and find the real issues underlying
this remedy. While I do not think we should be prescribing it every day, we
also should not discard it.
