Doctrine of Signatures:  William Coles'  Table of Appropriations Nose: Wake-Robin (Arum), Fleur-de-luce (Iris), Horsetail, Shepherd's Purse, Willow, Bistort, Tormentil, Cinquefoil, Sowbread.

Scent. Doctrines of Signature.: Smell is another signature. I remember walking down a trail, coming into the sphere of smell of a grove of balm of gilead trees (Populus candicans). One could smell them fifty feet before they appeared along the path. The lungs immediately felt soothed -- this is an excellent remedy for hot infections in the lungs with rasping coughs and irritated tissue.

The ancients believed that strong-smelling plants would drive away evil spirits and so employed these aromatics as fumigants: cinnamon, clove, arbor vitae, frankincense, [and myrrh].

The herbals of the ancient Egyptians are dominated by these scented-herbs, almost to the exclusion of any other plants.

Many pleasant smelling herbs such as thyme, rosemary, and juniper are still employed as disinfectants and deodorizers, and are the herbs included in the incense method of disinfecting rooms employed even today in French hospitals. Aromatics such as marjoram, mint, rosemary, and anise were employed in Elizabethean days to counteract mouth odors, halitosis, and body odors. The active principles of most aromatic herbs are highly antiseptic or germicidal and contain valuable antibiotic principles. Included in this category are the aforementioned herbs plus tansy, pennyroyal, sage, savory, fennel, and other food-seasoning herbs.

Ferr-pic.: a specific

Lem-m.: [Robin Murphy] acts especially upon the nostrils. Nasal polyps, swollen turbinates, crusts, atrophic rhinitis. Foul smell in nose, excessive catarrh, sneezing

attacks. Putrid taste in mouth, sometimes loss of sense of smell.

Mur-ac.: Nosebleed in whooping cough, in zymotic fevers, in diphtheria and scarlet fever. Dark putrid blood from nose.

Rhynchophorus ferrugineus = Rote Palmen-Rüssler Coleoptera. Ist im Organismus unauffindbar/zeigt sich durch Zerstörung wie Malaria/Borreliose

Sulph.: unhealthy skin S(roughness/cracking/scaling of the cuticle/chilblains, nettle-rash (Often an herpetic saddle across the nose, or a congested condition of the nose, with a tendency to bleed).

[Farokh Master]

Nasal obstruction

Stict.: Dull headache constantly due to nasal obstruction; the obstruction is felt more at the root of the nose; the nasal mucus membrane is dry that  compels  the  patient  to  constantly  blow  the  nose;  blowing the nose fruitlessly without any discharge is a peculiar symptom.

[Clarke]

Nose bleed - Considers Ferr-pic. almost a specific for nose bleeding. 3rd trituration is recommended.

[Dr. Shreya Deshpande]

Causative factors may be:

1) High blood pressure

2) Nasal polyps

3) High intra-ocular pressure

4) Head injury

5) Recurrent allergic colds and coughs

6) Idiopathic (unexplained)

7) As a replacement to normal menstruation in some women

8) Hot weather

Obviously causative factors play an important role while selecting homeopathic medicines for a patient with nosebleed. But there are cases when some patients have a tendency to develop nosebleed without any reason whatsoever. Here homeopathic miasmatic remedies can help get rid of the tendency. Causative factors are important because unless you treat the root cause, mere stopping of

nosebleed will be temporary with suppressant medicines and it is of no use.

One must however be cautious while prescribing for epistaxis due to head injury and appropriate emergency action should be taken acutely. For chronic cases of nosebleed due to nasal polyps,

homeopathic medicines can help get rid of polyps without undergoing any type of surgery. No wonder homeopathic medicines are called “surgeon’s knife” for replacing surgery on many occasions

like this.

For peculiar symptoms like replacing menstruation with epistaxis, expert homeopath can relieve the patient within few doses of the indicated remedy depending upon the matching of characteristic symptom. Looking at the vast repertory analysis of single symptoms like epistaxis makes homeopathy a great combination of art and science. Learning the homeopathic theory is easy but comprehending the peculiarity of various constitutions, their mental sphere, and applying the vast homeopathic material medica into day to day practice is a job of patience and hard work. But when all that is done, the results are wonderful and humanity as a whole is benefited with this miraculous system of medicine!

[Farokh Master]

Meli.: Epistaxisusually due to congestion in the head or brain or due to hypertension; the nose is dry; epistaxis can also accompanied by migraine or menstruation or any septicemia. The face

is congested; the blood pressure is increased.

Chronic atrophic rhinitis: Luff-o.

Nosebleed vicariously with menstruation: Dulc.

Boils in nostrils: Bac.

Burning nose: Ars.

Croc-s.: blood dark, clotted and very stringy. Usually comes at the time of puberty and problems associated with this like reproach from parents due to misbehavior or excessive fun and joy with no sense of responsibility. Attacks of epistaxis after every bout of physical exertion (playing cricket/playing football/playing games). [Dr. Kent] case persistent profuse epistaxis, think of Croc-s. characteristic of this remedy bleeding starts the blood coagulates very fast, the blood coagulates so quickly and it turns into what is known as long strings (Merc. Nit-ac.).

A case of a child with an obstinate epistaxis, the bleeding may come any time from any nostril; not related to any weather changes but it was stubborn, it was chronic, they tried all the remedies

in homoeopathic materia medica by consulting at least several homoeopaths. The child was not feeling well. When I was trying to interview the child I saw that there was a constant quivering

on his upper eyelid. And outsider will surely feel as if his upper eyelid has gone into spasm. This is a very important clinching point, immediately I opened the repertory, I saw this rubric in the section of eye ‘quivering upper eyelid’ and there are very few remedies mentioned in this particular rubric like Ars. Calc. Con. Stram. Verat. but the most important thing that I knew it was Croc-s. with the concomitant of chronic epistaxis, persistent epistaxis, not responding to usual line of treatment with the strong concomitant of quivering of the upper eyelid.

Croc-s. has got lot of involuntary movement from head to foot. Many Crocus patients have complained of unusual pulsation or shocks in the head. And these shocks are quite deep or some waving sensation in the brain. Others have complained to me twitching of the eyelids, quivering of the eyelids, winking of the eyes etc.
