The Serpent in human consciousness
We know, from anthropological studies, that the serpent is associated
with most cultures. Traditionally it symbolises fertility and procreation,
wisdom and healing; and,
due to the fact that it sheds its skin, death and resurrection.
Artefacts depicting the serpent have been unearthed in Mayan and Aztec sites
and serpent beings such as Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent God (who was
sometimes depicted as a serpent devouring its own tail/= Ouroboros oder
Uroboros), was worshipped in N. America
along with similar images named Cihuacohuatziti and Cihuacohuatl in
Mexico and Peru. Greek creation myths speak of Ophion the snake which incubated
the primordial
egg from which all created things were born; and, in Chinese mythology,
it was Fu Xi and Nu Wa who were the intertwined male and female serpent beings,
representing
the Earth and Heaven, who united to create humans (interestingly) from
clay.
The Sumerian God, Ningizidda, was depicted as the double headed snake
coiled into a double helix. This is, perhaps, an early representation of our
DNA, and, perhaps its origins, but may also highlight the notion of duality in
Nature; a concept which can be linked to the idea of Volition and Two Wills
which is a theme well represented in the Lacs (“our most important medicines” [Kent)
as a kingdom. Some theorists believe that Ningizidda was the mythical Thoth who
established the early mystery schools in
Egypt where individuals seeking “knowledge” (Enlightenment) came to be
initiated. It is beliefs such as these that underpin the wisdom aspect of
serpent mythology, and
are, perhaps, associated with the “Fall of Eve” as depicted in Genesis.
However, I think it is important at the outset, that we ask…just what exactly
was the nature of the “knowledge” that the serpent was keen to share with
Eve? And why is it that Michelangelo, in
his depiction of this event on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, chose to
depict the serpent/Satan in female form?

Germanen: Bevor die Welt geschaffen wurde, war nichts als der Ginnungagap, in dem das erste Wesen namens Ymir lebte. Da hoben Burs Söhne die kahle Erde, in der
bereits der Weltenbaum Yggdrasil keimte, empor und schufen Midgard auf der Erde. Sonne, Mond und die Gestirne entstanden, und obwohl die Himmelslichter noch
nicht ihren Platz eingenommen hatten, ließ schon der Sonnenschein das erste Gras aus der Erde wachsen.
Als die Götter Nacht, Neumond, Morgen, Mittag, Nachmittag und Abend benannt hatten, damit die Zeit gezählt werden konnte, bauten Altar und Tempel, schmiedeten Werkzeuge, lebten im Reichtum ihres Goldes und vertrieben sich die Zeit beim Brettspiel, bis drei mächtige Riesentöchter kamen. Daraufhin beratschlagten die Götter,
wer die Zwerge aus Brimirs Blut und Bláinns Knochen (wohl Ymir) erschaffen solle, die sodann als Nächstes entstanden. Am Strand fanden dann die drei Götter Odin,
Hœnir und Loðurr Askr und Embla, leb- und schicksalslos, und schufen daraus die Menschen, deren Schicksal die drei Nornen von der Urðr-Quelle unter Yggdrasil bestimmen.
Aus dem Haar Ymirs entstehen die Bäume/aus dem Gehirn die Wolken/aus den Wimpern Midgard = die Welt der Menschen geschaffen wurde.
Ersten Wesens aus Feuer und Eis entstanden hat eine Parallele im iranischen Bundahischn das vom Wirken des guten Schöpfergottes Ohrmazd im Licht der Höhe und
bösen Schöpfergottes Ahriman, der in finsterer Tiefe wirkt. Beide Sphären trennt leerer Raum, in dem sich die Welt befindet, in der sich Gutes und Böses mischen.

Jan de Vries: Ginnungagap = der von magischen Kräften erfüllte Urraum‘. Demnach war am Anfang also eine Leere, die nichts Materielles enthielt, die aber schon von
den geheimnisvollen, unsichtbaren Kräften erfüllt war, die später das Leben erzeugen sollten. = „Wie Chaos“ = prima materia und prima potentia.
Hier gibt es Parallelen in Schöpfungsmythen der Iraner und Inder, die auf ein mögliches gemeinsames, indogermanisches Erbe hinweisen. Für die Vorstellung des leeren
Raums gebraucht der Rigveda gahanam gabhiram‚ „tiefer Abgrund“ Das Bundahischn verwendet an vergleichbarer Stelle „tuhigih“ = „Leere, leerer Raum‘.
Diese Mythen ist die alte Vorstellung gemeinsam, dass das Sein aus dem Nichtsein hervorgeht.
Pan Gu o. P'an-ku = chinesischer Urmensch und Weltenschöpfer, der dem Chaos in Form eines Hühnereis entstieg und Himmel und Erde erschuf.
