Doctrine of Signatures.

Strongly purple or indigo plants, such as wild indigo, true indigo (woad = Isatis tinctoria) and echinacea, are remedies for deep inflammatory processes where there are tendencies to putrefaction, necrosis, and tissue death -- black being the ultimate color signature for tissue death. It seen in the way the leaves die back suddenly to black

in wild indigo (= false indigo/= Bapt.), from the marks of black on leaves, like in lady's thumb (Polygonum persicaria), in the black roots of black cocosh.

Burgundy red is the color associated with the blood-builders: rehmannia root, beet root, sumach berry, and yellow dock root -- the latter is more a rusty red.

Zinnoberrot = quecksilberhaltige Farbe (Maya).

These terms are closely related to the colors of the four humours, yellow (bile), white (phlegm), red (blood), and atrabile (blue-black).

All of these terms are based on the doctrines of the ancient Greeks and the nature of instinctive, innate body language. The Hippocratic theory of temperaments is closely related to the psychological and the physiological functions of the psycho-neuro-endocrine system (PNE) and morphological structures. The intrinsic connection between constitutional development and the neuro-endocrine secretions are well known in modern medicine. Nevertheless, the 2500-year-old Hippocratic system is still much more advanced in its observations of human temperament. The following rubrics are part of a collection taken from traditional sources and a clinical study spanning more than

a decade.

[Babbitt]

At the other end of the colour spectrum, red light has been shown to be effective in the treatment of cancer, constipation and in the healing of wounds. Chromotherapy is now also used to improve the performance of athletes; whereas red light appears to help athletes who need short, quick bursts of energy, blue light seemed to assist in performances that require a steadier output of energy.

By comparison, pink light has been found to have a tranquilizing and calming effect within minutes of exposure as it seems to suppress hostile, aggressive and anxious behaviour in individuals.

Pink holding cells are now widely used to reduce violent and aggressive behaviours and tendencies amongst prisoners – with some sources going so far as to report a reduction

of muscle strength in inmates within 2.7 seconds following exposure to the colour pink. Yellow should be avoided in such contexts because it has been found to be highly

stimulating, with a possible relationship being drawn between violent street crimes and sodium yellow street lighting.

Burgundy red is the color associated with the blood-builders: rehmannia root, beet root, sumach berry, and yellow dock root (more a rusty red).

The color red in rose petals, raspberry fruit, stems, and leaves, strawberries, red clover, and the sour red berries of barberry, is usually associated with cooling and reducing fever -- yellow with fever and chills. As the color tends more towards the blue or purple side it becomes more of a blood purifier or detoxifier, acting on fever and inflammation arising out of impurities in the blood and fluids that need to be burned up. Various shades of purple show up in the stems of burdock, dandelion, and plantain.

[Gupta, 2007:7]

Chromotherapy or „colour medicine“- is a centuries old concept that has been used to successfully treat and cure disease through the application of the full spectrum of visible light i.e. colour. According to the principles of chromotherapy, all ailments are the result of an imbalance or lack of the applicable colours within an organ or life system of the human body. Healing is therefore thought to occur by the application of the unique wavelengths and oscillations inherent to the appropriate colour found to be lacking or imbalanced in these organs and systems.

[Nevorndutt Somaru]

The history of colour medicine or ‘‘chromotherapy’’ is as old as that of any other medicine still in use today; evidence suggests that the use of colour as medicine stretches

as far back as to ancient Egypt, India, China and Greece where people placed immense faith in colour as a healing modality while being fully unaware of the scientific facts

of colour as medicine. According to the doctrine of chromotherapy, the human body is basically composed of colours, and colours were therefore responsible for the correct working of the various systems that function in the human body.

Each organ and cell is said to have had its own unique vibrational pattern or frequency that was harmonized by the frequencies of a correspondingly appropriate colour that had been ascribed to that particular organ or system. Therefore, every organ had an energetic or vibrational frequency at which it functioned at its level best. This meant that any departure from that vibratory rate in those organs or systems resulted in pathology or ‘’disease’’ that would in turn require the restoration of the appropriate frequencies, through the use of chromotherapy, in order to re-establish balance and healing.

In the hermetic traditions, the ancient Egyptians and Greeks utilized appropriately selected coloured minerals, stones, crystals, salves, oils and dyes as remedies - as well as painted treatment sanctuaries in various shades of colours. In India, the ancient medicinal system of Ayurveda also heavily stressed the importance of sunlight, which contained the entire spectrum of colours as white light, to treat a variety of disorders. Colour was thus intrinsic to healing, which involved restoring balance to an ailing system. Avicenna (AD 980) advanced the healing use of colour in his time as he made clear the vital importance of colour in both diagnosis and treatment. Avicenna used colour treatment with the view that red moved the blood, blue or white cooled it and yellow reduced muscular pain and inflammation.

Likewise Pleasanton (1876) used only blue and stated that blue was the first remedy in the case of injuries, burns or aches; it was also said that he cured certain diseases and increased fertility, as well as the rate of physical maturation in animals by exposing them to blue light. The same methodology of employing the colour blue was adopted by Hassan (1999), who also found blue to be very useful as a first-line treatment in injuries as well as for burns.

Edwin Babbitt, regarded as the pioneer of modern chromotherapy, presented a comprehensive theory of healing with colour. Babbitt believed that all the vital organs had

a direct connection to the skin via the arterial and venous blood supply, and therefore coloured rays of light could affect the entire blood stream through circulation and elimination of toxins. He identified the colour red as a stimulant, notably of blood and to a lesser extent the nerves; yellow and orange as nervous stimulants; and blue and violet as soothing to all systems and as having anti-inflammatory properties. Accordingly, he prescribed red for paralysis, physical exhaustion, and chronic rheumatism; yellow as a laxative, emetic, and purgative; blue for sciatica, meningitis, headache, nervous instability and sunstroke. He is also said to have developed various ‘’colour elixirs’’ by irradiating water with sunlight filtered through coloured lenses, and claimed that this ‘’potentised water’’ had remarkable healing powers once ingested. However Babbitt fails to explain the energy changes in water and how different kinds of vibrations affect water. He also does not explain what is meant by the potency of his ‘‘potentised water’’.

More modern applications in the use of chromotherapy include the use of blue light in the treatment of the once potentially fatal neonatal jaundice, rheumatoid arthritis, burns and various lung pathologies. Bright white full-spectrum light is also now being used in the treatment of cancers, seasonal affective disorders, anorexia, bulimia, insomnia, jet-lag, and alcohol and drug dependency.

Pink holding cells are now widely used to reduce violent and aggressive behaviours and tendencies amongst prisoners – with some sources going so far as to report a reduction of muscle strength in inmates within 2.7 seconds following exposure to the colour pink. Yellow should be avoided in such contexts because it has been found to be highly stimulating, with a possible relationship being drawn between violent street crimes and sodium yellow street lighting.

This work has given a new dimension to chromotherapy, and the use of colour is now fast becoming widely accepted as a therapeutic tool with various medical applications. This is especially true since research has now confirmed that certain parts of the brain are not only light sensitive, but are actually able to respond differently to different wavelengths (colours). It is now also believed that different colours of radiation interacts differently with the endocrine system to stimulate or reduce hormone production, thus having far reaching effects on the entire human organism as a whole – both on a psychological, as well as on a physiological approach.

Colour preference and handwriting

The true colour preference (or aversion) is a non-structured, formless elemental symptom. It indicates a basic mood and state of the vital force, which is even beyond mental forms and structures; colour is formless. Handwriting, on the other hand is form and structure. Handwriting images the sum total of personality structure in the form of habitual motion patterns. It can also tell about the level of development of a person. Taken together, colour and handwriting constitute an ideal pair to indicate the characteristic disposition of a person, non-structured as well as structured.

Colour and handwriting are very helpful supplemental symptoms to find better remedies. They are easy to get and relatively simple to use. They require no elaborate techniques of anamnesis, and yet they reflect the disposition from its very root, even deeper than single mental symptoms do. How were these new symptoms revealed and established? The inspiration and discovery are thanks to the German homeopath Hugbald Volker Muller, who published these ideas in 1990. Patients cured by the same remedy have shown similar colour preferences and handwriting structures.

So these are clinical symptoms of the remedy, indicating the disposition. We learnt the method from Muller and have been integrating a colour preferences and handwriting successfully for the last 16 years with our homeopathic prescribing, along with Jan Scholten’s new concepts. The colour preference can be determined unambiguously a standardised printed colour system [’colours in homeopathy’ (C & H), see bibliography]. This homeopathic colour standard supplies a common basis for further research and ensures a safe international comparison. By coding the colours, we know exactly which colour we are talking about. Merely naming colours as red, blue or green is too vague and leads to failures.

Concerning the handwriting, as a reference stock, 750 handwritings of 315 remedies are available, printed in original size (H & H). These two new symptoms can be readily used by every homeopath willing to try their validity. But now let us get ready for out wanderings on the silver series.

Healing with Light

Hospitals routinely use blue light on newborns to treat bilirubinemia. U.S. Navy uses colored light to speed the healing of wounds.

[Dr. Tony Chu]

Acne patients treated with red and blue light showed on average a 76% decrease in the number of visible spots.

[Tina Karu, PhD]

Found light receptors in our cells, which when stimulated by light, increased DNA/RNA synthesis, as well as protein and collagen synthesis. The result is rapid healing

of damaged tissue.

[Dr. Norman Shealy]

Increase in various neurotransmitters in patients exposed to red, green or violet light.

100 g Wolle.

Color remedies (spectrum)

The color preference expresses the inner state of a patient directly, and as such it is a significant and specific homeopathic symptom. It has been helpful to indicate or confirm the correct diagnosis of a remedy in many cases. The color preference as a homeopathic symptom was discovered by H.V. Müller in 1985.
